KEVIN DEYOUNG is Senior Pastor of University Reformed Church in East Lansing, Michigan, across the street from Michigan State University. A graduate of Hope College and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, he serves on the executive team of RCA Integrity, a renewal group within the Reformed Church of America. For years my husband and I were in a modern evangelical church where we learned how we could take our "five stones" and knock down the "goliaths" in our lives, or march around our "jericho walls" and keep praising till they came down. We'd only heard that "catechisms" were for those "dead denominational" churches or were somehow "catholic" in a derogatory manner. Then, by God's gracious providence (you'll learn what that term is on Lord's day 10 in this book) He led us to the reformers via two ways: reading history and reading a great theological book (Old Paths by JC Ryle...someone else today's evangelicals should read pronto). We discovered the Heidelberg Catechism, the Cannons of Dordt and the Belgic Confession of Faith (Three forms of Unity as they're called). Practical and theology were were told were mutually exclusive. Not so we soon discovered. In order to know how to live our Christian life you need to know what exactly is the Christian life and that takes knowing, knowing the teachings of the Bible or what they call "doctrine" and you need to know What God has required, What God has Provided and Who it is who provided it as well as How that provision has been made and how what was required has been completely satisfied; not by you or your faith but rather by the perfect obedience of Christ the Righteous One.I came across this book while looking for some ebooks for my new Kindle (which if you don't have, I highly recommend getting for yourself). I've decided to read a chapter a day making it more of a devotional or daily reading book...I'm glad I did. I've now been when you can call Dutch Reformed for about 3 years and the wealth in the Catechism never ceases to amaze me. However, what makes this book so wonderful is that DeYoung, with a pastoral heart and theological head brings the reader to an understanding of these timeless truths with the tenderness a shepherd should and with a bit of humor, heartwarming stories and care for those who, by continued exposure may have forgotten the treasure they possess in these historical documents, and for those of us just discovering these treasures makes their discovery or recovery all that more exciting. So impressed with this book were my husband and I that we decided to give it to two of our nieces who while they've made their public professions of faith, do so within an evangelical environment not too different than what we were brought out of. We longed for them to be grounded in the truths of Gospel, Grace and Gratitude and found DeYoung's impassioned plea for believers of all ages an appropriate venue to help them understand Law, Grace and Gratitude as well as The Apostle's Creed so that they too may cherish them hiding them in their hearts and helping those around them come and discover the Catechism in all its beauty.If you grew up Reformed and forgot the sweet taste of these truths I encourage you to taste and see how good our God is to us.If you grew up being told "catechism" was for dead churches, I challenge you to read this book and witness how very alive the faith of the Reformed churches is and to feast of their bounty and be nourished in the Doctrines of Grace as recovered by the Reformers and laid out for you in tasty morsels which will only make you hungrier for real theology that effects the head, heart and hands.

I bought this book to use as a devotional in 2011, right after my freshman year of college. I have read it through at least three times since then, and it only gets richer and more meaningful as I get older. Kevin DeYoung’s writing is fresh, accessible, and matter-of-fact. His theology is sound, and his love for the Lord is evident on every page. He breathes newness into the Catechism for me each time I read this book, and the Catechism sends me to Scripture and the Lord with renewed awe and devotion.I cannot recommend this devotional enough. I’ve tried to find similar meditative works and keep coming back to this one. It is accessible enough for younger people but theologically rich enough for more mature Christians, as well. I wish more Reformed theologians/writers would write devotional or meditative books like this!

As my friend Buddy likes to say, the subtitle of a book means more than the title. That is certainly true of Kevin DeYoung's newest book, The Good News We Almost Forgot. The add-on is, "Rediscovering the Gospel in a 16th Century Catechism." See what I mean? Buddy was right.I feel like C. J. Mahaney when he states in his review, "I'm sure this will be the best book on the Heidelberg Catechism I've ever read. I know it will be the first." Like most people, I have never read a book on this or any other catechism. I'm glad I did, though.For those of you who have not heard of the Heidelberg Catechism, it was published in 1563 as a way to help with a systematic study of the teaching of the Bible. It takes readers through important theological concepts framed within the Lord's Prayer, the Ten Commandments, and the Apostles' Creed. Ladened with Scripture references, the Heidelberg Catechism helps Bible students to get a bird's-eye view of Reformed Christian doctrine.As for DeYoung's book, it is organized in a similar format as the Catechism. DeYoung divides the Catechism into 52 readings, one for each Lord's Day. In addition to the original text, he provides a short, 2-3 page commentary exploring the themes and offering practical applications in an engaging, readable way. From the virgin birth to the resurrection, from the Trinity to divine providence, from the Sabbath to justice, this book offers a brief discussion on a variety of topics pivotal to the Christian life.The one point of criticism that I have of this book is the chapter on infant baptism, and it is not because I'm a believer-baptism proponent. I am eager to find out why others believe in infant baptism, and search for lucid pieces that explain it. This was not one of them. DeYoung falters here in his confusing, rambling, and (in my opinion) illogical connection of circumcision to paedo-baptism. He has to make too many logical jumps and assumptions about entering into "covenantal communities" that he appears to ignore too many passages in the New Testament about baptism. As I reread what I wrote, perhaps my critique is more with infant baptism as a whole rather than DeYoung's defense of it.While it may be odd to read a commentary of a commentary of the Bible, but I highly recommend this book for devotions, public reading, or as an introduction to Christianity. I think that you'll enjoy this work, and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of both the Heidelberg Catechism and the Bible.

About the Author
Prof. Rivka Barkai-Golan received her Ph.D in 1956 from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She has been a Senior Research Scientist in Postharvest Pathology and Mycology at the Volcani Center, Bet Dagan and a Professor of Postharvest Pathology at the Faculty of Agriculture of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where she has been honored a Distinguished Professor.

Prof. Barkai-Golan has been a pioneer in the research on ionizing radiation as a means for prolongation of the postharvest life of fruits and vegetables; Chairman of the microbiological Group of the Institute of Technology and Storage of Agricultural Products (1979); Chairman of the Food Technology Committee of the United States - Israel Binational Agricultural Research and Development (BARD) (1984); Chairman of the Steering Committee for Radiation Applications in Agriculture, and a Delegate
of the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture for the International Conference on Food Irradiation in Geneva (1988) for the preparation of International Document on the Acceptance, Control and Trade in Irradiated Food.

Prof. Barkai-Golan has been the recipient of search grants from BARD (1985, 1987) and from the CDR US-Israel Cooperative Development Research Fund (1988).

She has published over 150 scientific papers as well as invited reviews and chapters. She wrote 4 books in the field of postharvest diseases. She was invited to present introductory and review lectures at International Congresses and Workshops, was the organizer and chairman of postharvest sessions in Israel, Wageningen Holland, Pretoria S.A., Caracas Venezuela, Kyoto Japan, Belgerate Italy, and presided over the Third Israeli-Italian Phytopathological Symposium, Tel Aviv (1994).

Her current research interests are host-pathogen interactions, non-chemical means for postharvest disease suppression and factors involved in mycotoxin production in harvested fruits and vegetables.

Prof. Nachman Paster is an expert in Mycoflora and Mycotoxins of Stored Products and Food, in the Volcani Center and a Professor in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJ), The Faculty of Agriculture, giving the course on: "Moulds and Mycotoxins in Agricultural Produce and Processed Foods".

I purchased this for my mother who, for over 25 years, had lived with physical, emotional, and mental abuse from my stepfather. He was controlling her every move (I mean, looking at store receipts to see when she left and how long it took her to get home). He dictated when she could call us, her children, when she could see us, where she worked and when - which was in HIS business.He was and still IS NUTS!!! After my mother left him he literally wrote letters to the FBI saying that while my mother lived with him, she tried to poison him (we have the copies). Moron didn't know that the doctors can do a hair follicle test to see if there's any poison in his body. Instead he told the FBI that a doctor told him that there's no evidence of poison in his body because too much time went by. Luckily the FBI did not believe a word of his ramblings.It took my sister, my husband, and I over 20 years to get her away from him, and we finally succeeded. She's been away from him now for almost 4 years.Unfortunately now, my mother feels lost, worthless, and unhappy.My mother defines who she is by accomplishments such as education. I disagree. I know happy people who have never held a job. I know security guards happy with their lives and doctors who are miserable.My mother has worked her whole life, from the time she was 14. She lives in the past and regrets not "being smart", not going to school, not being ambitious. She's 57. She had me, her first child at 19 and worked her butt off. I don't know, or see, when she would've had the time to do anything else other than work. Not only that, she was born in Eastern Europe; didn't come to the States until she was 34, where, again, she HAD TO work.I, and most people would think she has accomplished quite a bit, but what do I know, I'm only her daughter.Now that she is divorced and not working, she believes she is literally nothing. I certainly don't agree.Anyway... I know... TMI.I had never been a fan of Dr. Phil. He seemed arrogant; HOWEVER, I have since changed my opinion. I don't agree with him on everything, but I feel he tells it like it is.I gave my mother this book on CD and I asked her what she thought. She said that it is as if Dr. Phil wrote this book specifically for her. I drives me crazy because what Dr. Phil says in this book, I have been telling my mother for years. I guess it's the messenger and not necessarily the message.It is a great, tell it how it is, book. If you're willing to find it within yourself to forgive yourself, change and move on, this is a great, informative book.Well worth every penny

This was a very helpful and easy book to read. Dr. Phil has such great advice and makes one feel so valued, that I've accidentally referred to him as Uncle Phil twice!!!

I've done so much work on myself in the past, trying to find out who I am and my purpose in life. I've read The Purpose Driven Life,Awareness,The Four Agreements,Dianetics,Don't Sweat the Small Stuff,The Road Less Traveled, and many other books because I was unhappy with my life. I felt stuck. And I know I'm meant for something other than working at a job I hate. Those books helped me open doors inside, clean the glass off many windows, and shed light on many aspects of my life I hadn't thought of in years.You'll need a journal to write stuff in for this book. So what the difference between this one and The Self Matters Companion is really unclear; from what I saw the companion book has space for your writing, though I doubt it'll be enough. This book takes some of the concepts from other books and mixes them with personal stories from Dr. Phil, the purpose to spark some memories within yourself to apply to the exercise you will take over the next few days. And you should expect to take quite a bit of time to finish these exercises, being as thorough as possible, as honest as possible; some of the later exercises, especially the 5-step Plan, could take a couple weeks. Don't rush through the book and jot down anything or you'll be wasting your time.You owe it to yourself to find out what you really want in life, to do the best you can for yourself, to be honest with yourself and others. This book showed me that I had to forgive myself after years of self-abuse, self-hatred, guilt, and shame. I couldn't have done it without the help from this book.

It doesn't matter whether you are a fan of the author or not, this book is absolutely amazing. I have loaned my first copy out to many friends and I had to order another one for myself. It is helpful to look back when trying to refocus on certain things that come to light later on. That is part of what is so amazing about this book. It takes you on a journey to the inside, to the past- to look at things and people, places and events, and lets you safely decide for yourself where you are and how you are and who you are. It has really been a factor to help bring about a change in my life, which equals a change for my children and theirs. If you are not ready to be honest and ready to make that change, don't get it. But if you are, this is the one I would recommend, and I say buy an extra and share it. It will help them too.

Wow! This book is very inspiring. Makes you examine what is important in life and gives you tools to reach for it. I could not put this book down. I loved the fact that Dr. Phil shared his personal experiences and that just encourages me to know that if he could do it, and he has and is doing it daily, then I can make the transition also. That's just the boost I needed. :)

This is my first book by this author. It was a very emotional reading. I always lived under assumption that senior or superior could not be wrong. Big mistake. I was especially impressed by the part when author rebelled against unfair school principal. It took me sometime before I brought myself to listen to the book again (audiobook). I recently acquired Life matters book and calendar. It also hit the spot.

Great book! Well written. I found this book very insightful and relevant. It truly helps you know yourself better and love yourself! Definitely would recommend it to anyone who needs to figure out that Self DOES Matter!
