I bought the hard cover based on one review that said the photos couldn't be enlarged. I should have gone with my instincts to try the digital version first The paperback is a fine little book to carry in a pocket as a reference. The book (either format) is good for those who understand how to handle watercolors. It's packed with good little refresher (and refreshing) ideas, but primarily shows finished pieces. Information about which colors and brush sizes were used is given. Sizes of the actual paintings and paper are also provided in both inches and centimeters. There is some instruction given, a lot more than might be expected in something this small, buty I feel readers should know some basics if they are total beginners. I liked it enough that I decided to take a chance and get the Kindle version. WOW, I should have done that first. On my Kindle Fire H D 7, the paintings enlarge beautifully (at times to larger than the screen). The text also enlarges with no problems on the digital version, but I could read the paperback format with my bifocals- no problems. The color and detail are great- really helpful. I still think the paperback is a handy reference, so I will probably give it to a Kindle-less friend. This book seems like it would be very helpful for urban sketches. It really helps the painter focus on the basics and simplify/streamline the whole process. For me the Kindle format is the better choice and value.
After reading reviews that complained about the size of this book, I bought the kindle version. I could increase the size of the paintings Simple.
As a beginner preparing for first class, I bought this little book. Read it on an airplane and was convinced I could not adequately use watercolor medium, however, the second reading generated a little confidence. Once I actually tried some exercises with the extensive supplies I'd purchased (I LOVE buying supplies for any and all activities!) I really came to appreciate the wealth of information in this tiny book. The author did an admirable job of covering many of the terms and techniques of watercolor and provided excellent examples. I actually like the small size, not to mention the small price! I've purchased larger and more expensive books that did not begin to match the content in Hazel Soan's book.
I believe this is the best tutorial I ever used in my first year of painting. I've read many books, watched a lot of You Tube instruction, and practiced many techniques but this book taught me so much more. I highly recommend it.
I'm a beginning watercolorist. I like this ebook for the many inspiring examples of watercolors done quickly. While the author explains how they were painted it is not a step by step guide as such. I read through in a few days and now will use it for reference.The only issues I have is with the conversion from print book to kindle version. There were a few misspelled words and a few missing pictures.Also the layout didn't always follow exactly. The text might refer to the painting on the right for instance when it is on another page.Mostly not a big deal but I would've liked to have gotten all the paintings.
I've been painting watercolor for nearly a year. I wish I'd had this book then, as it would have saved me thousands of dollars on supplies and countless hours scouring other books with the same claim.. If you're new to watercolor, like me, I'd HIGHLY recommend this book for you. Save your money, as this little (and it is tiny) book is all you need. Hazel Soan's tips in this book are unparalleled, her instruction clear, precise, and absolutely pitch perfect. She does not give in-depth instruction, but enough to encourage you to use your intellect and instinct to paint on your own. It is not a "recipe" type instruction, but powerful, nonetheless. Cannot give this book enough stars, it's that good. Best $8 I ever spent for my watercolor obsession. It was one of two books I bought for my niece when she got bit by the watercolor bug. Superb.
I didn't realize it was pocket size but I love it. It is not really for beginners but I've played a little bit with watercolors and find this book an inspiration to have at hand, I plan to carry it with me in my little storage box of watercolors and tools and papers so that I can just pull it all out and practice during my lunch hour as most of the examples can be accomplished in a short period of time. The artwork shown uses a small palette of colors but look terrific, in my opinion. It's wonderful what can be painted with just different tonal colors of black to gray, or blue to light blue, etc.
