I consider myself a professional Rubyist and Clojarian by trade and have often dreamed of a world in which someone would optimally combine the best aspects of both languages while leaving as much as possible of the shortcomings of either behind. When Jose Valim introduced Elixir, I was excited about a ruby-like functional programming language on the Erlang VM. It wasn't until I read this book by Chris McCord that it became clear just how much of a master stroke Elixir's language design and implementation decisions were.This book is a straight-forward presentation of the basic building blocks for AST manipulation via Elixir Macros. Reading this book allowed me to feel immediately comfortable both leveraging metaprogramming techniques in my own code and reading/reviewing the metacode of others. The choice of examples is extremely helpful in grokking the basics and served as a reference for me whenever I would get stuck looking over more advanced code examples in the wild. Chris' encouragement to actually use macros (when appropriate) in general day-to-day programming is in pleasant contrast to the unfortunate "avoid using macros" party-line that tends to be echoed in the Clojure community.I read this book having read Colin Jones' Mastering Clojure Macros and taken Colin's class at Clojure/West. I consider both Metaprogramming Elixir and Mastering Clojure Macros must reads for AST-based metaprogramming and, although they cover metaprogramming in two entirely different languages, much insight can be gleaned from reading both.

tfw I realized I have been tricked into using a LISP

Great book; recommend for advanced Elixir users and not people who are just picking up the language. Much of the macro writing involves manipulating Abstract Syntax Trees, which you most likely won't do unless you are writing a framework or just super skilled at Elixir and have the need to cut down on repetitive code.

The fact that the Elixir language is gaining popularity is a great thing, considering how good it is.The language itself is around for almost three years now, but only recently books are popping out.Learning by a guy who uses the language from its very beginning is a very different experience than struggling with books written by Elixir newbies (although experienced in other languages)...Chris is one of the former guys, having presented Elixir at RailsConf '14.He's also an experienced Ruby programmer, that's particularly useful from the meta-programming point of view.In case you are interested on the Erlang/OTP Elixir counterpart, i suggest the Saša Juric (Elixir in Action) book: again learning form an Elixir alpha-geek that was an Erlang aficionado is a real pleasure.

This book provides a lot of value for its ~100 pages! You'll find a bunch of practical examples of Elixir metaprogramming in the wild. Great for anyone wanting to go beyond the basics and really understand the open-source libraries out there for Elixir or those that want to write their own libs to reuse across projects. Definitely a 5/5!

Bought book for my medical coding courses. As I flipped the pages I was in awe as how the anatomy of the body is. This book is big, heavy, the graphics are amazing, in love with this book! You will enjoy reading how the human body mechanism works. You will not be disappointed. The only thing is that the book is heavy!

This is a beautiful book. It does a wonderful job of showing the human body and explaining. I love it, my kids love it, friends who come over pick this book up and love it. A must have in a home collection. It makes answering questions kids and adults have about the anatomy of their body very easy and straight forward.

I'm a biologist. I wanted to find an exceptional book to teach my kids about the human body, and this book is IT. The book gives a very visual understanding of what's inside us, in a lot of detail but not in so much detail that the big picture is missed either. I got tired of thin kids' books about the human body that offered little information beyond the fact that we have a body and it does a bunch of things we all know that it does. At least some kids want and can handle more. My 3-year-old son LOVES this book! While I got this book for my kids, it's perfect for adults as well. Adults could spend a very long time mastering everything in this book. It's an absolutely fabulous in-depth introduction to the human body. And it's truly beautifully put together, with tons of beautiful color illustrations. For anyone who wants to know about human anatomy and to a lesser extent some basic physiology & disease biology, this is your book. BUY IT TODAY!!! (And no, I'm not selling it. :) DO NOT HESITATE!!! I've never seen a better book about the human body.

I am currently applying to occupational therapy school and this has to be the best designing book I have ever seen for anatomy and physiology. It goes in depth of everything in the human body and add some context to what you need to study, it is really good if you are specified in a specific area of the human body. The quality of information is outstanding and if I was a professor I would use this book for anatomy and physiology classes.

Very comprehensive anatomy book. As an RN, I highly recommend this book. Straight forth, not too medical. But, not talking down to anyone either. Since I hadn't practiced nursing in over 10 years, I donated all my nursing books to a local school, thinking I could look up anything I wanted to on the internet. I've been vegan for almost four years and have a small collection of plant-based nutrition books and cookbooks, but had never bought an Engine 2 book before. I picked this up at a friend's suggestion (she had told me about the free Facebook support group) and because I had seen some of the recipes in the daily emails the Engine 2 group sent, and am so glad I did. If you're new to plant-based eating, there is a lot to learn here, but even if you're been vegan for awhile, this has really good advice for moving to a whole-foods diet, and the recipes are tasty and easy!If you decide to follow the seven-day plan, you won't be eating dairy, eggs, meat, or any oils (including oil and coconut oils) or drinking any alcohol, and you'll be limiting your fats to just walnuts, small amounts of avocados, and the fats that exist naturally in plant foods. You're also meant to minimize your salt and sugar intakes.The recipes are based on the foundation of building oatmeal-based bowls or waffles for breakfast, and then bowls, soups, or open-faced sandwiches for lunch and dinner. Since one of the rules is to not drink your calories, there are no smoothie or juice recipes.Part I of the book (which comprises the first 176 pages) is where the author outlines the programs, and he draws upon the latest studies to explain why a plant-based diet is so healthy. He takes the time to de-bunk the myths that you can't get enough calcium or protein from plants. Although I knew most of this information, it was a helpful review, and if you're new to plant-based eating, I think that the information can help alleviate any worries you might have about meeting your nutritional needs from plants.Part II (pages 177-279) contains a more detailed overview of what you can eat during the seven days, as well as quite a few recipes to get you started. I've only dipped my toe into the eating plan, so to speak, and have just been trying a few recipes, but my hope is to be diligent about following the plan for seven days, and, when I do, I will be sure to update my review with my results.

This is one of about 6 books we bought that were authored by Rip E. and John McDougall, MD. What they say has proved to be true for us. We have been doing this for 5 months and it has become our new eating lifestyle. If you read many of their books, get the most recent ones. A lot of the medical information is similar, but updated, BUT all the books have recipes and the more recent books have simpler and tastier recipes than earlier books. Having all those recipes from which to choose has made this diet easy to follow. Once we got the hang of it, we began to experiment making our own healthful and tasty recipes. It is like an adventure for us -- something we never got into as a couple in our 40+ years of marriage. Our old way was mostly woman in the kitchen and man pouring cereal or out at the BarBQ grill.I think it was easiest to do because we both did this diet together. We eased into it by studying and experimenting a little at a time over a period of one or two months before we were confident that we could live with this as our family diet going 'full time'.Side note: I guarantee that if you drop meat, dairy, oils and eliminate sugary and fried salty foods as much as possible, you can eat mostly organic healthy food from good quality grocery stores and you will notice that your food bills are LOWER.Bon appetite, and enjoy your life more!!

This is a great beginner book for the new plant based eater. Experienced vegans will find the recipes on the simple basic side. I love the Bowls because I am NOT a fan of sandwiches. He has many good bowl ideas! He has open faced sandwich recipes for those who love sandwiches. I would have liked to see more gluten free options and gluten free info, and subs for allergies like citrus. I'm allergic to citrus, and bananas. If you're highly motivated his plan is great. If you don't think you can go so strict so fast, you may need to step down slowly and I didn't see any info there about that. I took away a star for NO INDEX as I bought the kindle version. If you're publishing a book please include an index. There is also no Table of Contents. If you don't like cheaply published books, you won't like this one. All in all it was pretty good. Beginners will enjoy the ease and simplicity of becoming plant based.

Think you've heard it all because you've read so much about Whole Food Plant Based Eating? I thought so too, but I was wrong! Learned several things but the most shocking to me is what happens to our bodies when we sit for prolonged periods of time. Check out pages 156-158. I did the fix and immediately noticed a huge difference! I really didn't think I would. The Author has a great way of putting scientific information in easy to understand terms and he helps the reader figure out how this relates to their life.This is an excellent book and a great program. Even though it's called a "diet" you could do it long term just fine. This is a life changer, folks!

The information is presented in a way that anyone can "get it". Easy is my biggest desire for all my food and this is it! From quick breakfasts, to on the go dinners, it has it all! 100% plant strong and 100% doable for even the worst cooks like me who want to me healthy!!!

If your new to this way of eating, this is a very good book. If you're a seasoned plant based eater you may not be impressed. This book needs more recipes in it to be worth the price. It does have some good ideas about how to build a meal with different kinds of ingredients for people new to this lifestyle. Beginners tip- if you find some of the recipes bland, kick up the spices a notch until your taste buds have time to adjust. The book came in perfect condition and is printed in the USA.

Great program. Helps stop the craving for daily meat. Keeps you on the path of health. If you haven't broken the sugar habit or salt habit this plan will help.

Nice concise way to get started in the whole food plant based diet. No oil, no sugar, no salt, and eliminate the processed foods. It is a great book and a good read about a great way to live.
