I’ve been following Dave and his travels, appreciating his insight, and the sincerity he conveys through his website and podcasts- so I was excited to read this book having listened to his interviews with the elders along the way.Dave models an earnest approach to mindful living by seeing the lessons and stories in these every day lives that are worth sharing.Through the experiences and words of the elders, Dave enlightens and alerts us to where the stories of our own lives lie, and where they indeed have the potential to lead.His enthusiasm around the value of listening, being present to and intentional with our relationships is contagious and I’m encouraged to be more observant and pay more attention.I appreciate how Dave weaves the stories he encounters in his own life between these stories he shares- into the bigger picture life lessons that any one of any age can find benefit in.

Dave's experiences and conversations with the elders he has met through his many travels and social events are told in a way that makes you feel as if you are sitting across from him in a coffee shop. His eye opening stories, and re-telling of stories are some of life's most valuable lessons we all need to hear or of which we need to be reminded. So many times throughout the book I felt as if I was hearing a story from my own grandmother or my mother or father. They are all gone, but through Dave and his comical and beautiful storytelling, I was able to feel a deep reconnection with them and the stories they told me over the years. This book was excellent! It had great stories and more importantly served to deliver an important message; you can learn so much from elders. Make sure they are not ifnored and forgotten. Engage with them. Dave, the author, is an inspiration. I have taken a meditation class with him, read his books, and participated in a yoga and chocolate workshop. All have been awesome!

Extremely disappointed.... horribly written, impossible to enjoy any of the stories as it seems to be written in another language and translated by someone who doesn't speak it fluently. What a shame....going into the trash.

This is a great book! When I was younger- I didn't much care for my "elders". Now that I'M older- I realize what a treasure trove of information and calmness elders are. They have so much wisdom and appreciation of life. This book tells such great stories of what people have endured. Found it to be motivational, kind hearted and interesting.

Steven Johnson's narrative of the 1854 cholera epidemic in London's Soho district is by turns illuminating, thought-provoking, and a little bit irritating.I don't think it's a perfect book, but I'm glad that I read it. For one thing, it sent me to the dictionary more than once*. For another, he artfully relates the cholera epidemic as a struggle of microbiology and of society. "Ghost Map" is about one kind of prokaryote (an organism composed of a cell with no nuclei, i.e., a bacterium) which needs eukaryotes (all other organisms, including humans) in which to live and multiply, and it's also about the humans who unwittingly create ideal environments for the cholera bacteria's life cycle.It's also about cities - and although I'm not sold on everything Johnson writes about the future of urbanism, he has some intriguing ideas. Because of them, I'll probably again read The Death and Life of Great American Cities - which I haven't looked at in years - with a new perspective.I would recommend "Ghost Map" not as a book with all the answers, but as one with a well-told historical tale which also poses important questions about the future of our urban life.----------*I admit that I'm using in this review some of the words I looked up - hoping that it will help me remember them.

The primary reason that country people began to move to the cities was because many estates were converted to sheep farming. See the history of the so-called 'Highland clearances'.The description of the disposal of human bodies and graveyards in general makes one wonder why cremation was not widespread.Concerning Johnson's discussion of the scavengers in third world countries, in America, in the 21st Century we still have people who make their living scavenging the streets, highways and dumpsters for metal, such as aluminum cans.It's interesting that Dr. Snow and the Rev. Whitehead actually interviewed people in the cholera infected areas. The aristocracy generally had no interest in the underclasses.All in all, The Ghost Map is a document celebrating the triumph of the scientific method versus "everybody knows".Read it. You may learn something.Since this book was published in 2006, some sections are now dated.

Through the London epidemic of Cholera in 1854, the author presents the Victorian era science, public opinions and participating individuals in the pursuit of stopping the epidemic. The book is about the urbanization of society and subsequent public health challenges, and how the experience shaped the management of urban governing through science, sociology and engineering and the future ramifications of urban issues in the time of global dangers. It is one of those exemplary non fiction, history/science/technology books that are entertaining with interesting participants, and their opponents--personal, political and environmental--, but in the end the triumph against all odds, thanks to some luck, but a whole lot of tenacity and scientific and personal integrity and faith. There are many lessons, one of which is what Susan Sontag wrote about as well, the malice of attaching morality to disease--here, for example phrenology, or internal constitution as a factor, classism, or the treatment of people with AIDS during the Reagan administration in our time. I found the only problem with this book is that his Epilogue is way too long than necessary, and he repeats same issues that have been discussed already.

Whitehead as a trusted, respected local was key in turning the made up minds of city agencies who stubbornly clung to the idea the disease originated in the foul, smelly air to accepting the actual catalyst for the outbreak.This is really an outstanding detective story very well told. A history lesson if you will. The facts, players and uncanny elusiveness of this indiscriminate killer called cholera progressed systematically without the bog down of boring statistics. The author skillfully carries history into our modern times with glimpses into our foreseeable future. A notable writing achievement.

This would be a five star book if the last 30 pages hadn't drifted into a conversation on nuclear weapons that is only tangentially related to the book itself. Anyone who has ever taken an epidemiology class has heard of John Snow and the Broad Street Pump, but this was a much more detailed account. In the same spirit of the Microbe Hunters, Steven Johnson puts his readers in the mind of the subjects. The quotes are real the thoughts inferred, but the story comes to life in a way a more traditional biographical or timeline approach can never do. Whether you care about cholera outbreaks in Victorian London or not, this is an interesting story about two determined men, public health, and how much city life has and hasn't changed.

Some of the novel's most riveting chapters describe the difficult winter trek that takes them 300 miles north to Canada, where Mercy settles into life in a traditional Indian village near Montreal. Uncertain whether she will be adopted by the Mohawk who captured her or whether the English will pay the ransom that would allow her to return to Massachusetts, Mercy struggles to balance loyalty to her own family and traditions with a growing appreciation for the Kahnawake way of life. Just how much her perspective broadens can be measured by the fact that, in addition to adopting many Indian ways, Mercy can find something sacred and comforting in the Catholic mass a rite she was raised to believe led straight to eternal damnation. Portrayed mostly as rigid, angry and dogmatic, the Puritans contrast poorly with the generally kind and commonsensical Indians, and Mercy's final choice is thus compelling. Though at times this account reads like the MTV version of the events (e.g., glancing over such important events as the death of Mercy's Indian father), the immediacy of Mercy's dilemma comes through despite its historical distance. Gr 6-8-The drama of history unfolds in this gripping tale based on the actual destruction of Deerfield, MA, in February, 1704. In a surprise attack, Mohawk Indians entered the town, burned it, and took captives with them on a 300-mile march to Canada. This is 11-year-old Mercy Carter's story. Accustomed to caring for her younger siblings, she becomes the mother figure for several of the children on the long and harsh journey. Although she waits to be ransomed, when the opportunity arises more than a year after her capture, she refuses to go back. Cooney artfully combines the intense drama of the situation with historical details of the period and the Indian culture. The conflict between the English Puritans from Deerfield and the French Catholics is also well depicted. However, although Mercy is an intriguing, feisty girl, her maturity is often unrealistic. She never panics; she always thinks ahead and projects the outcome of her actions. Cooney carefully draws her other characters to show myriad reactions to the capture, including the rebellious Ruth and others who are too devastated by their losses to care about what happens to them. It is unfortunate that only cursory mention is made of the Indians' underlying plight against the invading white man that led to such horrifying attacks. Still, there is a great deal in this engrossing tale to recommend it.

Forcibly led by their attackers, Mercy and the other surviving settlers set off on a perilous 300-mile trip to Canada, where the "English" will be ransomed, sold, or adopted by French and Indian families. On arrival, Mercy is sent to live with a Mohawk family, and her new life begins as an adopted Indian daughter. She ultimately becomes so assimilated that she chooses not to return to Deerfield when ransom is finally offered. Filled with cultural and historical detail, the third-person narrative reflects the settlers' fearful and prejudiced views of their captors, which seem historically accurate but may offend modern readers. Repeated references to scalping are also somewhat sensationalized. But, as Mercy wavers between her birth culture and her adopted one, she raises excellent questions about notions of "savagery" that will make this vivid, dramatic novel an excellent discussion book.
